Seeking permanence. The Calabash tree

El árbol de totumo (Crescentia cujete) que se presenta en mi proyecto busca representar el hogar y la manera en la que los Emberá en Bogotá buscan encontrar un hogar al que puedan pertenecer y en donde sean capaces de expresar y tener su cultura. Del mismo modo, busca representar la manera en la que están para quedarse y permanecer. También busca representar a través de las notas blancas las peticiones de los indígenas y en notas negras el abandono del estado a estas comunidades. A partir de esto, quería demostrar la identidad cultural personal y la identidad que han formado estas comunidades a través de estos procesos migratorios y los tratos degradantes e inhumanos que han experimentado.

The calabash tree (Crescentia cujete) represents the search for a home and sense of belonging for the Emberá community in Bogotá. This is an ongoing journey for a place where they can express and keep culture, as well as a place or space of permanence. Along the tree are a series of white paper notes with petitions from the Emberá to the government, and in black, notes that speak of the failure of such petitions, expressed in years of abandonment by the state. Ultimately, this is about the formation of personal and communal identity through experiences of migration marked by a lack of basic human rights. Charcoal drawing, black and white paper notes.
